HKBTS's Path to Practical Theology

Since 2009, Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary ("Baptist") has been committed to constructing a practical theology with "theological wisdom" (theologia). Preachers with "theological wisdom" can discern the heart of Jesus Christ and help people use His thoughts, feelings, and examples to practice what they believe in and respond appropriately to current situations. Practical theology emphasizes the practical wisdom of theology, which can be practically applied in pastoral scenes and social reality, so that people can be fearless in challenging days, ride on the spiritual wind, and move forward with perseverance.

What to Study? Why Study?

Alben Wong (Th.M.) Rethinking the meaning of learning Graduation is approaching, and my heart is filled with gratitude. Time is limited, but grace transcends the limitations of time. My studies from Master of Divinity to Master of Theology were full of grace. I have to thank Baptist Theological Seminary for allowing a lazy person like me to enjoy the joy of learning again and again in ample time. During this period, the guidance of the teachers and mentors helped me to understand again and again what pastoral workers should read and why they should read. The latter is a warning to me as a working preacher, so that I don’t get lost in the busy ministry. Learning always has its own meaning. Therefore, the focus of my sharing is on the edification of the seminary. I think this is also a criticism of the preacher himself. Although there is no perfect role model in the world, the teachings here make me reflect on myself and not be led by the times. ...

Wong Mui-ling (Th.M.), Master of Theology Rev. Wong and Dean Cao Wei-tong awaiting dispatch and continuing to be equipped One day fifteen years ago, on the huge campus of Baptist Theological Seminary, I put on my Master of Divinity graduation gown with a grateful heart, silently saying in my heart: “Here I am, please send me.” This was my original intention of being called. The Best Reward for Life’s Impermanence

Connie Cheung (Th.M.) with her husband and daughter. I still remember that at the end of 2014, facing the social situation, I prayed and asked Heavenly Father how to shepherd His sheep, especially the college and early career youth who were the hardest hit. Heavenly Father inspired me to study His word in depth, and to walk with those brothers and sisters who are in suffering with His grace and promises. So, I entered this master's degree program in theology with the concepts of "suffering", "the Father's words", and "pastoral care". ...

Applying What I’ve Learned and Deepening My Ministry

Pastor William Lai (Th.M.), Master of Theology, with his wife and two sons. The joys and sorrows of the journey of further study. Those who have studied while working know that it is not easy to serve in the workplace while studying theology. This is different from what it would be like if you were enrolled full-time in the Master of Divinity program. Although I had more subjects to study and more homework to complete at that time, I was in a learning state and could study without distraction. However, when I was studying for a master's degree in theology, I was busy with church affairs from Tuesday to Sunday. On Monday, when I could have taken a short break, I had to return to the Western Australia campus early in the morning to attend classes. I also had to finish my thesis at the end of the semester, which was a great test of my spirit and will. ...
