Ordinary Prayers of a Legend

Lam Chi-yeung Assistant Professor of Christian Education Elijah’s Legendary Life When we read the stories about Elijah in 1 Kings chapters 17 and 18, we will find that Elijah was a true legend. Elijah’s name first appeared in 1 Kings 17:1: "And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of Gilead, said to Ahab, ‘As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I serve, there will not be dew or rain these years, except at my word.’" Elijah’s appearance and his first words show a very vivid image of a prophet with a strong "aura" that touches the hearts of every reader. ...

Submission to God’s Plan

Fung Wing-mui (B.Th.) Looking back on the past six years, she, her husband Jingren, and their son Huoyan, discovered that many things did not go as they had imagined. I still remember that in 2016, my husband and I entered the Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary to receive theological training. My theology course was supposed to take four years to complete, but because I had a child during that time, I started studying at a slow pace from the second grade and it took me six years to obtain the degree. Year after year, watching my classmates graduate one after another, I feel a mixture of emotions! All I can say is that God's plan is far greater than we could ever expect. ...

Dual Focus on Study and Practice

Richard Wong (M.Div.) Richard Wong, his wife, mother and sister faced learning difficulties during their first semester at Baptist Theological Seminary. Many questions arose in their minds, such as: Do we need to know how the Bible was written? Why do we need to know so much about the history of the development of doctrines? In addition, I have no habit of reading and am a novice in writing academic articles. Looking at the rich collection of books in the library and facing the unpredictable homework requirements, I can only say in my heart: do my best! ...

Our Graduates’ Reflections and Sharing

When brothers and sisters are called to enter the Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary (HKBS), they are entering a group of disciples of Christ and receiving theological education. In the fellowship of the group, they learn to be disciples of the Lord, are equipped with biblical and theological knowledge, learn to practice their faith and pastoral skills, and cultivate spiritual character. Even though the environment is changing and there are ups and downs, we still face the challenges of life and study together, experience the brokenness and renewal of life, broaden our spiritual horizons, and learn to obey the Lord's unexpected plans. I hope that this year’s graduating students will continue to be favored and used by the Lord, become His worthy servants, spread the gospel, build churches, and expand the kingdom of God. Now, let us listen carefully to the reflections of graduates from the main campus theology program. ...

Interpretations of Love Poems in the Song of Songs and the Book of Songs: A Case Study of Song of Songs 8:5-7 and “Fishhawk”

Curie Qu Assistant Professor of Christian Thought Interpretation of the Song of Songs The Song of Songs is a book that is rarely preached from the worship pulpit because of its straightforward and explicit description of love between men and women. However, it was widely sung in weddings, celebrations, banquets and other occasions in Israeli society, forming a sharp contrast. Since ancient times, there have been two opposing interpretations of the Song of Songs: "allegorical interpretation" and "natural interpretation". As to whether the interpretation strategies proposed by past and contemporary commentators are right or wrong is a matter of opinion and is beyond the scope of this article. Below we will discuss some interpretation issues regarding the climax of the Song of Songs, chapter 8, verses 5-7. ...

Starting from the Theological Symposium ...

What was discussed at the first "Baptist Theological Academic Exchange Conference"? Why does "Baptism" promote the study of Barth's theology? What is the relationship between Barth research and the "practical theology" promoted by "Baptism"? After the new teaching and research building was fully opened in 2023, Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary ("Baptist Theological Seminary") held a variety of academic activities there, including academic exchange meetings and later "micro-lectures" from time to time. In March last year, we held the first "Bible Academic Exchange Conference" and the results were fruitful, so we will organize the second conference on March 25 this year. In addition, we held our school’s first “Theological Academic Exchange Meeting” on February 5 this year. The response was enthusiastic and the results were ideal. The following will report the grand occasion of that day, from which readers can understand the reasons why "Baptism" promotes Barth's theological research, as well as the relationship between Barth's research and the "practical theology" promoted by "Baptism". ...
