Hing-weng Seng Assistant Professor of Old Testament Among the Old Testament prophets, the prophet Elijah is a unique figure. The scriptures describe him as not experiencing a physical death, and the way he left was unprecedented and unique. The uniqueness of this prophet is seen not only in his ascension to heaven in a whirlwind accompanied by horses and chariots of fire, but also in the early days of his prophecy, as recorded in 1 Kings 17.
