A Responsibility to Nature and Posterity

Wong Fook-Kwong Old Testament Professor Natural Cathedral Over the years, many Christians have told me that they feel closer to God when they are in nature (such as during camping, fishing, or mountaineering) than when they worship in church. I often wonder, are they busy taking photos when enjoying the cherry blossoms in Kyoto, or are they really singing praises to God? In any case, one would expect that anyone who said that would have had a very comfortable time last year, as church venues were closed and worship was conducted online. Finally, we can worship on our smartphones while hiking and camping without feeling guilty! Seriously though, it is not without biblical basis that people feel closer to God in nature than in a church setting. Psalm 19:1-4 says:...

Endless Gratitude

Wu Libin, a doctoral candidate in divinity, and her husband, time flies. In January 2016, I entered the Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary to study for a doctoral degree in theology. I have completed the first draft of my doctoral thesis and my studies are coming to an end. I have been studying at "Baptist Theological Seminary" for more than five years. During this period, what made me most grateful was that God had prepared for me a dedicated and loving mentor, Professor Huang Fuguang. It can be said that without Professor Huang’s dedicated help and guidance, the first draft of my thesis would not have been completed. ...

The Sorrows and Joys of the Path of Learning

Candidate Yue Guangpu for the PhD in Theology Guangpu and his wife In 2018, I came to Hong Kong to study at the Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary and studied systematic theology under Professor Deng Shaoguang. Professor Deng was rigorous in his studies and gentle in his conduct, and his disciples benefited a lot from him. I studied at Nanjing Jinling Union Theological Seminary for seven years. Compared with "Baptism in God", Jinling's theological education focuses less on modern or contemporary theologians. Therefore, when I first came to "Baptism in God", I saw my classmates in the Bachelor of Theology class reading the works of contemporary theologians, and I was very envious. . "Baptism God" has a strong teaching staff, which broadens the students' knowledge and horizons; the teachers are impeccable in terms of academic quality and teaching skills, which is also the strength of "Baptism God". ...

God Leads the Way across Challenging Gullies

Zhou Zhizhi, PhD candidate in theology. In 1991, I started studying theology. At that time, I hoped that God would raise up spiritual giants like Song Shangjie again in the Chinese church. So, what can I do? I imagined how wonderful it would be if I could serve as a pioneer for such evangelists through singing! However, when I graduated from the seminary and passed the professional examination of the vocal music department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, I found that no one in the church cared about my ideas, so I gave up the music path and devoted myself to serving in grassroots churches. ...

Exploring the Way Forward by the Grace of the Lord

Doctor of Theology Candidate Lin Noxin once attended a camp held by an intern church. During this period, I tried hiking at night for the first time. There was no electric lighting and I had to camp step by step. For me, the process of pursuing a doctoral program in theology was somewhat similar to a night hike. In 2006, I obtained a Master of Divinity degree from Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary, then completed a Master of Divinity program and am now pursuing a PhD program in Theology. For me, it's like a journey of growth. The Master of Divinity course was like a basic course; in three years, I had a bird's-eye view of the Christian world and a little understanding of the "ABCs" of theology. When I entered the Master of Theology program, I began to enter into the rich Christian tradition and learn about different traditions’ confessions and reflections on God. Technically, I learned how to read and sort out the expositions of theological fathers to understand their situations and concerns. The doctoral program in theology has reached another level, not passively absorbing, but actively exploring. In the process, I not only need to learn and grasp the views and discussions of a certain theologian, but also sort out the development of theological and philosophical trends. This prompted me to learn to "see the forest as well as the trees" and learn how to distinguish and analyze and sort out the context. ...
