The Disorder and Order of the Poverty Alleviation Ministry

Sarah Shea Assistant Professor of Christian Education Living in Hong Kong, where there is a huge gap between the rich and the poor, many churches try to go into the community, reach out to the poor, and help neighbors in financial difficulties. However, there are also many churches that have experienced the joy of helping others briefly, but then lost their enthusiasm and even left in disappointment. This article explores the confusion and myths that are prone to occur in the church's poverty alleviation ministry from the perspective of practical theological reflection, uses a church case as an illustrative example, and then suggests an orderly way to smooth over the chaos in the church's ministry. This article has two purposes: in addition to hoping that readers understand the chaos and order of poverty alleviation ministry, it also aims to introduce how practical theology can contribute to the pastoral leadership of the church. ...

Humble Oneself and Work with Others

Ho Ching-man M.Div. Student I remember that in my first year, teachers and seniors encouraged us to take elective classes taught by other teachers in addition to the required courses, so that we could learn from each teacher’s expertise in the Bible, theological thought, and practical subjects. I hoped that in addition to enriching my knowledge, I could also broaden my faith horizons through the experiences of different teachers. Over the past two years, in addition to studying subjects taught by a single teacher in his or her specialized field, I also had the opportunity to attend some classes that adopted "collaborative teaching", namely "Preaching", "Introduction to Pastoral Care and Counseling" and "Pastoral Leadership and Ministry". All three subjects belong to the category of practical theology. ...

A Teaching So Deep and Wide

Lau Wing-kee M.Div. Student The courses that adopt the "co-teaching" model include "Ecclesial Theology", "Preaching" and "William: Worship, Ethics and Preaching". When students participate in a subject, they usually expect the teacher to share his research results on a specific topic and lead the students to discuss and learn in depth. In subjects that adopt the "collaborative teaching" model, teachers approach the same topic from different perspectives, demonstrating the diversity of different aspects of the subject through multi-angle analysis and dialogue. In the course of "Church Theology", professors with different expertise put forward clear viewpoints from different aspects such as the Old Testament, the New Testament, church history, theology, and ethical practice, and guided students to have in-depth discussions, allowing students to learn a deep and broad view of the church in a short period of time. In the "Preaching" course, President Cao and Pastor Lin not only taught the theology and methods of preaching, but also shared their experiences and insights in preaching. After the students gave their "trial lectures", they also received valuable advice from the two senior speakers, which was really beneficial. In the course "William", the three teachers had an impromptu dialogue in class to present a more three-dimensional view of the contributions that Pastor Wilimun can bring to the Hong Kong Church. ...

Unity in Diversity

Jonathan Lo Assistant Professor of New Testament Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary has a group of talented teachers with different gifts and expertise. "Collaborative teaching" allows us to use our unique talents while working together to move towards a common goal. According to Ephesians 4:11-13, the goal is “…to equip the saints for the work of service, so that the body of Christ may be edified, until we all reach the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (RSV). The body of Christ is unity in diversity; the role of seminaries is to teach students love, peace, and harmony while encouraging them to pursue their own unique identities, passions, and gifts. We must embrace diversity because only in diversity can we achieve true unity; only through true unity can we grow and experience the full stature of Christ. ...
